What are basic emotions?

Emotions are physiological and biological responses that prepare the body for adaptive function.  Basic emotions are emotional states whose expression is universal and innate. They express in a fixed way in every individual.  They are connected to behaviours cat’s need to survive. Secondary emotions are a combination of basic emotions.

Which emotions are basic?

  • Joy: the positive feeling that happens when something good occurs or some bad situation goes away (pain included). Leads to social interaction and is dependant on other primary emotions.
  • Anger:  in cats, it calls up all the energy to self-defence mode. We can see their ears pulled back or even be attacked without having the chance to calm them down.
  •  Sadness/ Pity: this emotion helps us stand still. If cats are ill or in pain, they don´t want to move, for example. After experiencing sadness, we should have a happy situation because these are complementary emotions.
  • Disgust: allows the cat to go away from foods, situations or objects that are potentially damaging. It also helps us to know it’s personality when we give him the chance to choose openly what he wants.
  • Fear: If cats can´t escape potential damage, they will show fear through defensive aggression. Most of the time helps them to survive by avoiding exposure to some situations.
