Christmas’ dangers

Christmas' dangers

Christmas is coming and we start preparing the tree, the crib, the lights, plants, and other decorations so that everything will be ready for the family dinner. We need to remember that many of these novelties are dangerous and/or stressful for our cats. We remember you of some of the dangers you can find:

  • Christmas tree: If it’s a real pine tree be careful, pine needles and pine sap are toxic. Choose wood decorations or any that won’t break. This prevents your cat from hurting himself if he knocks them down. Secure the tree to a wall or to the ceiling so that it won’t fall if your cat tries to climb it.
  • Tinsel and gift ribbons: cats love these”toys” that are a serious hazard. Eating them causes blockages getting tangled can get cats hurt.
  • Snow globes: can contain antifreeze that is extremely toxic to cats. Small amounts can cause death.
  • Candles: Cats are curious, they could burn their paws or whiskers. If cats knock them down they can start a fire.
  • Lights: if a cat chews on the cable they can get burnt or electrocute. You’d better turn them off if you are not watching.
  • Chocolate: Contains a substance very similar to caffeine that is toxic to cats. The more cocoa it has, the more toxic it is.
  • Grapes, raisins and macadamia nuts: are toxic to cats so they can’t have anything that contains them.
  • Garlic, onion and chives: are also toxic to cats and cause anaemia.
  • Alcohol: Can cause liver or cerebral damages, even in very small a amounts.
  • Poinsettia, mistletoe and ivy: are toxic to cats so you shouldn’t have them at home. If you have one it should be unreachable so your cat won’t chew it.

Are you ready for Christmas with your cat?
